Lagos LG Poll: Sanwo-Olu Urges Electorate to Lay Groundwork for Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election
As the countdown to the 2025 local government elections in Lagos begins, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on residents of Ibeju-Lekki to show their loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC) by ensuring victory for the party’s candidates — a move he said would lay the groundwork for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.
The governor made the appeal on Wednesday during the commissioning of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government’s New Secretariat Complex, a new Legislative Building, a 400-metre paved road, and the groundbreaking of a new Housing Scheme at the council headquarters.
“The local government election is coming, it’s just one month away. I want you to use the election to prove your worth so that by 2027, it will be a smooth sail for Mr. President,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The much-anticipated LG poll is scheduled for July 12, 2025, and is expected to serve as a litmus test for the APC’s grassroots strength ahead of the general elections.
Sanwo-Olu emphasized that his administration’s efforts — including infrastructure development and job creation — were targeted at stimulating rural growth and strengthening local economies.
“Everything we are doing fosters around creation of jobs, and an increase in the internal revenue of the local government,” the governor noted, stressing the strategic importance of the Ibeju-Lekki axis in Lagos State’s future.
In his address, Council Chairman Hon. Abdullahi Olowa recounted the tragic impact of the #EndSARS protests in 2020, during which the former council secretariat was burnt down. He praised the resilience of the local government and the support of the state government in rebuilding the infrastructure from scratch.
“Our administration took up the responsibility of restoring the local government’s machinery of governance from the scratch. Today, by the grace of God, we have not only rebuilt but also elevated these structures into modern, world-class facilities,” Olowa stated.
The Ibeju-Lekki Housing Scheme, he said, would further address housing deficits and attract economic investments to the area.
As political momentum builds toward both the LG polls and the 2027 presidential race, Governor Sanwo-Olu’s message was clear: the coming local elections are not just about local governance — they are a strategic launchpad for APC’s national ambitions.
